Tips 'n' Tricks for BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Handheld devices.

The "Allow Outgoing Call When Locked IT" policy specifies whether BlackBerry users can place/make calls when the BlackBerry handheld is locked.

When this IT policy rule is set to True in BlackBerry Manager, the BlackBerry user can configure the "Allow Outgoing Call While Locked" setting on the BlackBerry handheld. If the BlackBerry user changes the value of this setting to Yes on the BlackBerry handheld, the "Place Call" option will be available when the BlackBerry smartphone is locked.

Prior to BlackBerry Device Software 4.2, the default value for this setting on the BlackBerry handheld was No. The BlackBerry user needed to change the setting to Yes to turn on this feature.

With BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 and above, the default value for this setting is Yes. If an administrator wishes to remove the "Allow Outgoing Calls While Locked" option, the administrator must explicitly set the IT Policy rule value to False. This change is as designed.

Note: There is no way to change the default value for the "Allow Outgoing Call While Locked" option on the BlackBerry handheld to No. You must manually change the value from No to Yes.

Please follow the steps below to change this option.

For BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 and earlier:

  1. Click Options from the Home screen.
  2. Click Security Options.
  3. Click General Settings.
  4. Change the Allow Outgoing Call When Locked setting.

For BlackBerry Device Software 4.6 and later:

  1. Click Options from the Home screen.
  2. Click Password.
  3. Change the Allow Outgoing Calls When Locked setting.

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server creates log files which can be used for troubleshooting issues. By default, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server keeps a record of all log files.  These files can grow in size significantly and may require more efficient management.  To manage these files, you can perform any of the following procedures:

  1. Open the BlackBerry Server Configuration utility (available from either Start - Programs - BlackBerry Enterprise Server  - or -  in Control Panel).
  2. Go to the Logging tab.
  3. Change the location of the logs folder.

If you have an additional hard disk drive, or a drive with plenty of free space, on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you can change the location of the logs folder.
  4. Set the age at which log files are deleted.

You can specify the number of days that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will keep log files. This is set up so old log files will be deleted automatically.

Note: If you have log files older than the number of days specified, they should be deleted manually.
