When content protection has been turned on, and the BlackBerry smartphone is hard reset by removing the battery, after the BlackBerry smartphone restarts, it may display a "java.lang.IllegalStateException" error message.

This issue may be caused by the BlackBerry smartphone having content protection turned on and the Flickr Uploader for BlackBerry application is attempting to access a secure area of the memory without the proper authorization.

There are two workarounds available for this issue:

Option 1:

Remove the Flickr Uploader for BlackBerry smartphones application from the BlackBerry smartphone.

To remove Flickr Uploader for BlackBerry smartphones application, complete the following steps:

  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, open the Options screen.

  2. Open Advanced Options.

  3. Open Applications.

  4. Highlight the Flickr Uploader application.

  5. Press the Menu button.

  6. Select Delete from the menu.

  7. Select Delete from the confirm menu.

  8. Reset the BlackBerry smartphone, if prompted.

Option 2:

Turn off content protection on the BlackBerry smartphone.

To turn off content protection on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, open the Options screen.

  2. Open the Security Options screen.

  3. Open the General Settings option.

  4. Select the Content Protection option and change it to Disabled.

  5. Save the settings.

Note: You may not be able to turn off content protection if the BlackBerry smartphone has an IT policy that requires content protection to be turned on. If this is the case the only work around is to remove the Flickr Uploader for BlackBerry smartphones application.

When a user is experiencing synchronisation issues between their BlackBerry handheld device and the Lotus Notes mail file, it may be a result of a corrupt user state database.

While there are numerous methods by which you can resolve this issue, such as removing entries from the state database, the definitive method to resolve this issue is to re-activate the device for the user.

To do this, follow this process:

  1. Delete the user from the BlackBerry Manager

In BlackBerry Manager, right click the user, and select delete. When prompted as to whether to delete the state database or not, ensure that you delete it.
  2. Ensure that the user is purged from the server

In BlackBerry Manager, select the Users Pending Delete tab, and if the user is listed, right click and purge them from the system,
  3. Add the user back into BlackBerry Manager.

In BlackBerry Manager, just add the user as you would if they were a new user.
  4. Edit the users properties, and configure the PIM Sync options as necessary.
  5. Set an activation password for the user.

In BlackBerry Manager, select the user, right click, and select Set Activation Password.
  6. On the handheld, carry out an Enterprise Activation (Option – Advanced Options – Enterprise Activation)

    Active Image

Enter the users' email address (as it appears in the BlackBerry Manager), and the Activation Password that was set in St 5 above. Click on the BlackBerry key, and select Activate. Activation of the device may take up to 30 minutes, depending on the message pre-population settings, etc.
  7. Allow activation to complete.

When activation is completed, you will receive a message on the handheld stating "Activation Complete"

As the device is being re-activated for the same email address, old messages will be retained on the handheld device.

The Delete Prior option removes all of the messages on the BlackBerry smartphone prior to and including the date selected.

Email messages are not deleted from the Inbox in your email client when the Delete Prior option is used on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Use the Delete Prior option

  1. In the Messages screen on the BlackBerry smartphone, highlight the date from which you want to delete all prior messages.

  2. Click the trackwheel/menu key and select Delete Prior. Click Delete. All messages prior to and including this date are deleted.

The Problem
A user has reported that they are unable to delete emails from the device anymore.

The user could them, but could not delete them - not individually, and not using "Delete Prior".

The Cause

This issue is normally experienced after a Mail File design update has occurred.

The Solution

  1. Launch BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and go to Backup and Restore.

  2. Click on Advanced and then select Messages in the right pane (see below).

    Active Image

Once you have selected Messages, click the Clear button, then Close. Go ahead and close out of Backup and Restore, close BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and disconnect the Blackberry device.

  3. Now, on the BlackBerry device, go to Messages – Email Options.

  4. Go into Email Reconciliation.

  5. Turn off Wirless Reconcile, close out.

  6. Let the device sit for approximately 1 minute, to ensure that the settings take effect.

  7. Go back into Email Reconciliation.

  8. Turn Wireless Reconcile back On, close out.

To start or stop the BlackBerry services, complete the following in sequence:

  • BlackBerry Router
  • BlackBerry Dispatcher
  • BlackBerry Controller
  • All remaining BlackBerry services

After starting or stopping the BlackBerry services, close BlackBerry Manager.

Note: All of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services can also be started by clicking the Administrative Tools > Services drop-down list.

The BlackBerry services must be stopped or started in the specified order, to reduce the number of errors that appear in the Microsoft Windows Event Viewer Application Log.

Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones.

While installing a 4.1.x BlackBerry Enterprise Server for either Lotus Domino or Microsoft Exchange, utilising a remotely installed BlackBerry Router service, the following error may appear upon clicking the "Test Connectivity" button in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installer:

Attempting to connect to <routerhostname> (<routerIPaddress>), port 3101
Sending test packet
Waiting for response
Receiving response
recv(): connection lost

This error also appears if BBSPRTest.exe is run from a command prompt on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server being installed.

If the installation is completed, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will function properly.

Clients can test connectivity to the BlackBerry Router through port 3101 by using the Telnet utility from a command prompt as follows:

Telnet <routerIPAddress> 3101 <enter>

A successful connection will result in an empty command prompt window with the cursor blinking in the upper left corner (the screen may then be closed).

If the connection is not successful, Telnet will response with

Connecting to <RouterIPAddress>...Could not open connection to the host, on port 3101: Connect failed.

This indicates that there are real connectivity issues between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server which will require further troubleshooting. Possible causes include port 3101 being blocked by a firewall, and the BlackBerry Router not functioning properly on the remote host.
