Tips 'n' Tricks for BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Handheld devices.

BlackBerry devices have a security password feature that you can enable and disable whenever you need to. However, what happens when you forget the password for your BlackBerry device? Learn how to overcome the password security feature for your BlackBerry device.

BlackBerry Password Reset

BlackBerry devices have two passwords that allow you to use BlackBerry services. There is a BlackBerry password for your device and a BlackBerry password for your BlackBerry services. The BlackBerry device password protects your device in case of loss or theft. If you enable the BlackBerry device password, the person that finds your phone will not be able to access your phone contents or look at any information stored in your phone unless they know the password. The BlackBerry services password allows you to set up your email accounts on the BlackBerry. You can use this password to access your BlackBerry account on the BlackBerry website for your wireless service provider. You can use the password to tether (access the Internet provided on your BlackBerry through a computer) your BlackBerry device. You also need this password when you access the email settings on your device by clicking on the "Email Settings" icon on your BlackBerry.

Default BlackBerry Password Reset

You can reset your BlackBerry device password by systematically restoring the password to the default no password setting. All BlackBerry devices come with a standard systematic password reset that is triggered if you enter the wrong password ten times. This is a security feature that RIM incorporated on the devices and in addition to resetting the BlackBerry password, the operating system will erase itself and return to the factory default settings. This means that everything in the phone will erase including your stored phone numbers, data, text messaging, BlackBerry messages, media, pictures, videos, applications and anything stored on the micro SD (storage device) card. On the tenth try with the incorrect password, the device will reset allowing you to access the phone. However, you will need to enter all of your information back into the device manually. If you backed up your information previously, you can restore that information into your device using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

BlackBerry Services Password Reset

Reset the BlackBerry services password by navigating to the BlackBerry website for your wireless service provider using a computer. Normally, the website address is "the name of your wireless service provider.BlackBerry.com." As an example, if you have a BlackBerry device on the Sprint network, your website address you need to access is "Sprint.BlackBerry.com." Click the "Forgot Password?" link. Click inside of the "Pin" field. Locate the pin for your BlackBerry device by rolling your BlackBerry trackball down to the "Options" icon on your BlackBerry. Click "Status" and locate the "Pin" field. Type the alphanumeric number listed in this field on your phone into the field on the BlackBerry website. Click "Request Password." The BlackBerry service now sends the password to your device in the form of a text message.

This article discusses how to wipe a BlackBerry.

Steps to wipe the BlackBerry are given for the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Torch and older models and they vary slightly in execution.

Knowing how to erase data from your BlackBerry gives you the power to manage your phone. If you are having random software issues, wiping the handheld can sometimes work as a fix.

Backing up Data

You may want to ensure that you have all the right information backed up from your BlackBerry before initiating the handheld wipe.

Connecting your BlackBerry to your PC as a removable device will allow you view and to browse through the folders and copy any relevant data for backup.

You can copy any of these folders to your PC to make a backup.

How to wipe a BlackBerry Torch

  1. Go to Options
  2. Select Security
  3. Select Security wipe
  4. You have the option to erase:
  • Emails, contacts etc.
  • User installed applications.
  • Media Card.

You can select all of the above for a complete wipe. You will need to type blackberry into the text box provided to complete the step and select wipe data.

How to wipe a BlackBerry Pearl 9105

  1. Go to Options
  2. Select Security
  3. Select Security wipe
  4. You have the option to erase:
  • Emails, contacts etc.
  • User installed applications.
  • Media Card.

You can select all of the above for a complete wipe. You will need to type blackberry into the text box provided to complete the step and select wipe.

Older BlackBerry Models

Older BlackBerry models have a few less options or owner control features.

These particular instructions are based on the BlackBerry Pearl 8110 and will apply to most other phones of this generation (the Storm, the Storm2, etc). In general, use the following steps to erase data:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Security options
  3. Go to General Settings
  4. In this window use the blackberry key which pops up a menu
  5. On this menu select Wipe Handheld
  6. Select Continue
  7. Enter blackberry into the text box to confirm

Forced Data Erasing

You may have a password set up or delegated to your phone via your network provider. If you have a password assigned to your BlackBerry and you fail to enter it correctly at the default set times, you will be prompted to erase the handheld, forcing a new setup. Unfortunately this does not provide the opportunity to backup your data and both your setup and folders will be newly formatted.

The backup process above will benefit greatly in these cases. BlackBerry also ships with a disk containing BlackBerry Desktop Manager software that can also run the backup task and other phone related functions.

Not all users can send and receive messages after the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is restarted.

In the BlackBerry Manager administration program, the user list displays some users’ status as initializing.

When ordering additional Client Access Licences (CALs) for your BlackBerry Enterprise Server, it is important to be aware of the different types of licence that are available: Small Business (SBE) and Enterprise.

Although there is no difference in functionality between an SBE BES and an Enterprise BES installation, the two CAL types are not interoperable: it is not possible to add SBE CALs to an Enterprise BES; neither is it possible to add Enterprise CALs to an SBE BES.

The type of BES installation that you have will be determine by the CAL you used when the software was first installed: if you use an SBE CAL when installing the BES, it will be an SBE installation.

To identify what type of installation you have, do the following.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.x

Launch the BlackBerry Manager and select BlackBerry Domain in the console root:

Active Image

In the right hand pane expand Account and select License Management:

Active Image

Your CALs and their type will be displayed. In the above example the installation is an Evaluation one.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.x

Log into the BlackBerry Administration Service.
In the Servers and Components section expand the Component View. Select the BlackBerry Administration Service:

Active Image

CAL information will be displayed in the License Summary section. Again in the above example the installation is an Enterprise one.

The ports that are opened during the usage of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server User Administration Tool are as follows:

  • 137 (NetBIOS)
  • 3321 (TCP)
  • 11100 (TCP)
  • 13843 (TCP)

Bi-directional Ports 11100 and 13843 are documented for the BlackBerry Administration Service:

Administration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express for Microsoft Exchange

Note: Ports for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, and Express are all the same.

Copied below is the information on these ports from the above documentation:

TCP 11100: incoming data connections from, and outgoing data connections to, BlackBerry Enterprise Server components for HA JNDI
TLS 13843: incoming data connections from, and outgoing data connections to, BlackBerry Enterprise Server components for RMI over SSL

If you have purchased a BlackBerry, then one of the items on the agenda is security.

It is crutial that you protect your data!

Below  are a few ways to protect yourself and your device!

1. Device Password

Set up a password on your BlackBerry.

What does that mean?  After so many minutes of inactivity your BlackBerry will automatically lock.  It can be set anywhere from 2 minutes to 1 hour.  We don’t suggest an hour, that is pretty long but 30 minutes or less would be great.  We have to tell you that if you aren’t use to having a password you WILL NOT LIKE IT to start with but in no time you will get use to it and not even remember when you didn’t have one.

How to setup a password

  1. Go to Options

  2. Depending on the model of your BlackBerry device go to:

Either: Security Options » General Settings
    Or:      Password

The only settings that you need to concerned with is Security Timeout

  3. Security Time Out   -->  set this to 15 minutes or less

  4. Password  -->  set this to Enabled

  5. At this point, on some models, you may have to hit ESC and Save and it will ask you to enter your password twice.

TIP: You don’t have to enter and hit unlock, as soon as you see the black screen start typing your password.

2. Memory Card/SD Card

If you have installed a media card Micro SD/Memory Card)  in your BlackBerry you might have also stored some data on it. In most cases your data is not that confidential as on the BlackBerry’s internal memory unless you are using the memory card to store company files! Which people are starting to do!

You can enable the encryption mode for your BlackBerry’s internal SD card to protect the data on the memory card. This activation can be done by going to:

  1. Go to Options

  2. Depending on the model of your BlackBerry device go to:

Either: Advanced Options » Media Card
    Or:      Media Card

  3. Go to Security  --> Encryption

  4. Then set this to have to have a password.

TIP: Don’t forget to test by taking the card out of the BlackBerry device and trying to access it on a computer!
Once the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is configured to fail over automatically, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server starts the failover process automatically if the health parameters are greater than the failover threshold and indicate that the primary BlackBerry Enterprise Server is unhealthy and the health parameters are greater than the promotion threshold and indicate that the standby BlackBerry Enterprise Server is healthy.

Before you begin:

  • Install a BlackBerry Enterprise Server pair first

  • Configure the health parameters to meet the requirements of your organization

  • Specify the same proxy mappings for the BlackBerry Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) Connection Service instances on the primary and standby BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances

  • Replicate the state databases and the profile database from the primary BlackBerry Enterprise Server to the standby BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Steps to configure the automatic fail over:

  • In the BlackBerry Administration Service, on the Servers and components menu, expand High availability > Highly available BlackBerry Enterprise Servers.

  • Click the name of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server pair that you want to turn on automatic failover for.

  • Click Turn on automatic BlackBerry Enterprise Server failover.

  • In the System status section, the value for the Automatic BlackBerry Enterprise Server failover mode field changes to True.

Note: After the failover process occurs, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server turns off automatic failover.

Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Microsoft Windows operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.

Inorder to disable Notes Native Encryption on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Registry Editor.

  2. Go to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents

  3. Create a new DWORD Value with the name SECMSGSupported.

  4. Set the value of the key to 0.
