Tips 'n' Tricks for BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Handheld devices.
This article discusses how to wipe a BlackBerry.
Steps to wipe the BlackBerry are given for the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Torch and older models and they vary slightly in execution.
Knowing how to erase data from your BlackBerry gives you the power to manage your phone. If you are having random software issues, wiping the handheld can sometimes work as a fix.
You may want to ensure that you have all the right information backed up from your BlackBerry before initiating the handheld wipe.
Connecting your BlackBerry to your PC as a removable device will allow you view and to browse through the folders and copy any relevant data for backup.
You can copy any of these folders to your PC to make a backup.
Older BlackBerry models have a few less options or owner control features.
These particular instructions are based on the BlackBerry Pearl 8110 and will apply to most other phones of this generation (the Storm, the Storm2, etc). In general, use the following steps to erase data:
You may have a password set up or delegated to your phone via your network provider. If you have a password assigned to your BlackBerry and you fail to enter it correctly at the default set times, you will be prompted to erase the handheld, forcing a new setup. Unfortunately this does not provide the opportunity to backup your data and both your setup and folders will be newly formatted.
The backup process above will benefit greatly in these cases. BlackBerry also ships with a disk containing BlackBerry Desktop Manager software that can also run the backup task and other phone related functions.
Not all users can send and receive messages after the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is restarted.
In the BlackBerry Manager administration program, the user list displays some users’ status as initializing.
When ordering additional Client Access Licences (CALs) for your BlackBerry Enterprise Server, it is important to be aware of the different types of licence that are available: Small Business (SBE) and Enterprise.
Although there is no difference in functionality between an SBE BES and an Enterprise BES installation, the two CAL types are not interoperable: it is not possible to add SBE CALs to an Enterprise BES; neither is it possible to add Enterprise CALs to an SBE BES.
The type of BES installation that you have will be determine by the CAL you used when the software was first installed: if you use an SBE CAL when installing the BES, it will be an SBE installation.
To identify what type of installation you have, do the following.
Launch the BlackBerry Manager and select BlackBerry Domain in the console root:
In the right hand pane expand Account and select License Management:
Your CALs and their type will be displayed. In the above example the installation is an Evaluation one.
Log into the BlackBerry Administration Service.
In the Servers and Components section expand the Component View. Select the BlackBerry Administration Service:
CAL information will be displayed in the License Summary section. Again in the above example the installation is an Enterprise one.
The ports that are opened during the usage of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server User Administration Tool are as follows:
Bi-directional Ports 11100 and 13843 are documented for the BlackBerry Administration Service:
Administration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express for Microsoft Exchange
Note: Ports for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, and Express are all the same.
Copied below is the information on these ports from the above documentation:
TCP 11100: incoming data connections from, and outgoing data connections to, BlackBerry Enterprise Server components for HA JNDI
TLS 13843: incoming data connections from, and outgoing data connections to, BlackBerry Enterprise Server components for RMI over SSL
If you have purchased a BlackBerry, then one of the items on the agenda is security.
It is crutial that you protect your data!
Below are a few ways to protect yourself and your device!
Set up a password on your BlackBerry.
What does that mean? After so many minutes of inactivity your BlackBerry will automatically lock. It can be set anywhere from 2 minutes to 1 hour. We don’t suggest an hour, that is pretty long but 30 minutes or less would be great. We have to tell you that if you aren’t use to having a password you WILL NOT LIKE IT to start with but in no time you will get use to it and not even remember when you didn’t have one.
- Go to Options
- Depending on the model of your BlackBerry device go to:
Either: Security Options » General Settings
Or: Password
The only settings that you need to concerned with is Security Timeout- Security Time Out --> set this to 15 minutes or less
- Password --> set this to Enabled
- At this point, on some models, you may have to hit ESC and Save and it will ask you to enter your password twice.
TIP: You don’t have to enter and hit unlock, as soon as you see the black screen start typing your password.
If you have installed a media card Micro SD/Memory Card) in your BlackBerry you might have also stored some data on it. In most cases your data is not that confidential as on the BlackBerry’s internal memory unless you are using the memory card to store company files! Which people are starting to do!
You can enable the encryption mode for your BlackBerry’s internal SD card to protect the data on the memory card. This activation can be done by going to:
TIP: Don’t forget to test by taking the card out of the BlackBerry device and trying to access it on a computer!
- Go to Options
- Depending on the model of your BlackBerry device go to:
Either: Advanced Options » Media Card
Or: Media Card- Go to Security --> Encryption
- Then set this to have to have a password.
Steps to configure the automatic fail over:
Note: After the failover process occurs, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server turns off automatic failover.
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Microsoft Windows operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
