BlackBerry Enterprise Server TechNotes

Information relating to the installation and configuration of BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.x and 5.x mobile messaging platform.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 SP5 (4.1.5) is designed to provide support for the following:

  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino using Windows Server 2003 (32/64-bit)
  • IBM® Lotus Domino 7.0 Service Pack 3
  • IBM® Lotus Domino 8
  • Microsoft Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit)
  • VMWare ESX Server 3.0 Service Pack 1

Note: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) is designed to allow the BlackBerry Configuration Database to run more efficiently on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for large organizations.

In IBM Lotus Notes, users can include document links, anchor links, view links, or database links (application links) in their email messages. BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6 supports IBM Lotus Notes links in the email messages that users receive on their BlackBerry devices. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server retrieves the target information from the appropriate IBM Lotus Domino server and converts it into HTTP format. In plain text messages, the link appears as a web address. In HTML messages, the link appears as an icon.

Requirements

  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6

  • Any IBM Lotus Domino servers containing the target information must have the HTTP task running

  • Any IBM Lotus Domino servers containing the target information must be configured to allow browser clients to access databases on the servers

Turn on support for IBM Lotus Notes links

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server detects the IBM Lotus Domino servers that user accounts are assigned to and updates the map of IBM Lotus Domino server names and host names accordingly so that it can access the target information on these servers. If the BlackBerry Enterprise Server cannot detect an IBM Lotus Domino server (for example, if an IBM Lotus Domino server is in a different domain), you can add the IBM Lotus Domino server name and host name to the map manually using a registry value.

  1. On the computer that hosts the BlackBerry Messaging Agent, on the Start menu, click Run.
  2. Type regedit.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents.
  4. If necessary, create a registry key that is named DocLink.
  5. In the DocLink registry key, create a multistring value that is named ServerHostNames.
  6. Double-click the new multistring value.
  7. In the Value data field, type the IBM Lotus Domino server name and host name using the following format: <servername>!!<hostname> (for example, CN=server01/O=central!!test.rim.net). Type additional server names and host names on separate lines.
  8. Click OK.

Change how often the map for IBM Lotus Domino server names and host names updates

By default, the map that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses to access target information on IBM Lotus Domino servers updates daily at 3:00 AM. You can use a registry value to change how often the map updates.

  5. In the DocLink registry key, create a DWORD value that is named ServerHostNamesCacheTimeout.
  6. Double-click the new DWORD value.
  7. In the Value data field, type the interval, in seconds, that the map updates itself.
The minimum value is 3600 seconds (1 hour); the maximum value is 86,400 seconds (24 hours).
  8. Click OK.

Turn off support for IBM Lotus Notes links

  5. In the DocLink registry key, create a DWORD value that is named Disable.
  6. Double-click the new DWORD value.
  7. In the Value data field, type 1.
  8. Click OK.

After you finish: To turn on support for IBM Lotus Notes links, change the Disable registry value to 0.

Additional Information

BlackBerry Enterprise Server software is not currently supported when installed on Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Virtual Server.

When using VMware ESX, measure performance on the VMware ESX Server after installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and then gradually add BlackBerry smartphone users. Measure performance after adding BlackBerry smartphone users and compare to the baseline. If other virtual machines are running on the VMware ESX Server, it may affect how many BlackBerry smartphone users can be supported by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. See the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.1 Performance Benchmarking Guide for more information about performance measurements.

The BlackBerry device user receives the following error on the BlackBerry device during the enterprise activation process:

IT Policy Rejected. Please wipe handheld and try again.

The BlackBerry device rejects the IT policy that is pushed from the BlackBerry Policy Service.

This issue has more than one cause.

  1. The BlackBerry device is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that is being upgraded from a trial version to a standard version.

  2. The BlackBerry device was previously active on another BlackBerry Enterprise Server and has a conflicting IT policy.

Resolutions

Perform the appropriate resolution for the cause.

Cause 1

The BlackBerry device is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that is being upgraded from a trial version to a standard version.

Resolution

Instruct the BlackBerry device user to use the Wipe Handheld option to erase all the data on the BlackBerry device. For instructions, see KB02318. This allows the BlackBerry device to accept a new IT policy.

Warning: All applications should be backed up before the BlackBerry device user uses Backup and Restore in BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. For instructions, see KB12487.

After all data is deleted from the BlackBerry device, remove the BlackBerry device user account from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and then add the account again.

Cause 2

The BlackBerry device was previously active on another BlackBerry Enterprise Server and has a conflicting IT policy. This occurs if the previous BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the current BlackBerry Enterprise Server do not share the same BlackBerry Configuration Database.

Resolution

Send a blank IT policy to the affected BlackBerry device. This should erase any existing IT policy setting. For more information, see KB05106.
